Ride Virginia

The 'Grand Canyon of the South' on the VA–KY line is a riding destination via Spearhead Trails: Trail 15 connects the park to the Ridgeview system and on to Coal Canyon. The park also runs the ATV-friendly Southern Gap campground and cabins at the Coal Canyon trailhead. Riding inside the park is limited to the main road.

Spearhead's biggest system: 127 miles through the mountains of Buchanan County with overlooks, elk viewing and two ATV play areas. Connects to the Ridgeview system (Haysi) and Breaks Interstate Park for 200+ connected miles. The Breaks Park Southern Gap campground and cabins sit at the trailhead.

100 miles in Tazewell County with some of Spearhead's best overlooks and climbs. This is the Spearhead system where Jeeps and other registered highway 4x4s (OHVs) are allowed alongside ATVs and UTVs.

Spearhead's newest system: 33 miles near Pocahontas, including VDOT-approved road sections, that connects to the Original Pocahontas system. Shares the Miners Park trailhead and Trailhead Resort rentals/lodging.

118 miles linking Coeburn and St. Paul through canopy forest with big views, including about 20 miles of single track (good dirt bike riding). Spearhead HQ is in Coeburn.

94 miles of switchbacks, climbs, creek beds and cliffsides in Tazewell County, with about 10 miles of single track. Connects to West Virginia's Hatfield-McCoy Trails (Pocahontas/Indian Ridge side) and to Spearhead's Laurel Creek system. Trailhead Resort next to the trail offers cabins, RV sites and Polaris rentals.

78 miles in the mountains of Dickenson County around ATV-friendly Haysi. Connects to Coal Canyon (127 more miles) and to Breaks Interstate Park via Trail 15. UTV rentals and guided tours nearby from Haysi Offroad Adventures (276-865-2100).

Spearhead's most technical system: 34 miles near Pennington Gap with what Spearhead calls the best views in Southwest Virginia. No green trails, so it suits experienced riders. Note: Trail 1 is permanently closed at its intersection with Trail 3.

The Forest Service calls this the largest OHV trail system in Virginia: 36 miles on Massanutten Mountain open to Jeeps/4x4s, UTVs, ATVs and motorcycles. Three trailheads (Edinburg Gap, Taskers Gap, Peters Mill Run North) plus first-come Little Fort Campground (9 free sites) with direct trail access.

A roughly 10-mile loop on the North River Ranger District made of Second Mountain Road (FSR 502) and Dictum Ridge Road (FSR 422), designated for recreational ATV/OHV riders. The narrow, twisty connector is the challenge; other sections are wide. No drinking water.

A 19-mile network of 7 color-blazed, two-way loop trails built for ATVs and dirt bikes (50-inch limit) in the Glenwood-Pedlar district, with views, mountain laurel and shade. Vault toilets at each trailhead.

Locally called 'Catfish Pond' (formerly Outdoorsman Park), a private park east of Martinsville with roughly 60 miles of looping, muddy wooded trails, primitive camping and a stocked fishing pond. No official website found.

A 1,515-acre private resort on the New River at the VA–WV line with 40+ miles of dual-track ATV/UTV trails and 60+ miles of single-track motorcycle trails; full-size vehicles also welcome. Camping, cabins, RV sites, onX trail mapping and occasional section closures posted on the homepage.

Private park east of Danville with about 50 miles of trails for all skill levels, beginner-friendly mud pits, snorkel ponds and obstacle courses. Weekend concessions and primitive camping. No official website found.

A 500-acre private ATV park with interconnecting woods loops past old homestead ruins and a deep mud pit. Graveled parking, portable toilets and primitive camping. No official website found; dirt bike policy unconfirmed.

A reopened private off-road park near Danville for ATVs and dirt bikes with cross-country/enduro trails, a small motocross track and a drag strip. No official website found.

An off-road motorcycle riding club on 275 acres along the Pigg River with about 20 miles of harescramble and hard-enduro trail plus an intermediate practice MX track. Primitive camping and three full-hookup RV sites. Also hosts Virginia Championship Hare Scramble Series (VCHSS) rounds.

Family-owned property near Carson with several miles of easy ATV trails and a large staging area; also hosts occasional concerts. Only a directory listing found; exact location not published (coords are town-level).

A privately owned 3,000-acre tree farm and campground 12 miles west of Winchester with 30+ miles of marked ATV and motorcycle trail starting from a central parking area. Also has 100 campsites, lakes, cabins and a rifle range; hosts 4x4 club events (Big Dogs Ice Breaker, Spring Fling, Main Jambo; Fall Crawl).

Multi-use off-road property off I-81 (exit 251, 1.5 mi north on Rt 11) with a motocross track, hare scramble trails, rock gardens, a drag strip and mud pits including the 'Hell Hole'. Known for monthly mud bogs.

Motocross park since 1993 on red clay north of Danville, known for the 'Mt. Deacon' over-under bridge. Also has a lighted ATV/dirt track oval and hosts the Moonlight MX Series and MX Sports Youth Regional.

Member-based riding facility on 230+ acres between Richmond and Williamsburg with a main MX track, beginner tracks, endurocross loop, flat track, TT and 6 miles of woods trails. Home of Bob's Cycle Barn museum and a beginner Dirt Bike Boot Camp.

Private, app-booked motocross training facility in Caroline County between Fredericksburg and Richmond. Offers coached private sessions and booked big-bike and mini ride days, not open practice.

Historic motocross park (since 1975) in a lakeside valley off US-58 between Martinsville and Danville, a former 500cc Pro National venue. Hosts a Loretta Lynn's Area Qualifier, District 13 and Moonlight indoor/outdoor series; RV hookups and cabins on site.

Long-running (30+ years) Wythe County motocross track known for 'Walkers Mountain', a 120-foot step-up. Last confirmed operating Feb 2025; its old website domain is now parked.

Family motocross and trail park on the Middle Peninsula east of Richmond with a 2-mile MX track, two kids tracks and about 8 miles of woods trails. Quads may ride the trails but not the MX tracks.

Practice-only motocross track open since 1982, about 40 minutes south of Richmond off I-95. Big bikes and riders 14+ only; track is prepped and watered through the day.

Motocross track (the Dirtplex) at the 500+ acre Virginia Motorsports Park southwest of Richmond, which also has a quarter-mile dragstrip, BMX track and mud bog arena. Runs open practice days and AMA-sanctioned MX races.

A veteran- and first-responder-owned 93-acre private riding farm near Lake Anna rented by the stay: 1.2-mile main MX track, short turn/kids track and 65+ acres of trail for dirt bikes, ATVs and UTVs. Two houses sleep up to 23; ATV rentals via DayTrail. Next public Day Ride Nov 14–15, 2026.

Mud bog pit at Virginia Motor Speedway, home of the annual Mud Mayhem (spring) and Run-A-Muck (fall) mud bogs with truck and side-by-side classes. Coordinates are town-level.
